Life Story
Albert Austin was born in Colac in 1863, the eldest son in a large family where responsibility arrived early and never really left. When his father died while Albert was still a boy, and he would have taken on the role of head of the family, helping to steady those around him. It was a pattern that would shape the rest of his life.
After attending school locally and working as a farmer, Albert chose a life of service, joining the Victorian Police Force shortly before his twentieth birthday. He was a tall, strongly built man, but those who knew him spoke less of his size than of his character. Even as a schoolboy, he was remembered for standing up for those who could not stand up for themselves — a trait that followed him into adulthood.
In 1884 Albert married Annie Elizabeth Martin. Together they built a family and raised three sons. Home mattered deeply to him, and his loyalty to family ran strong. When he learned that a young niece had been placed in a situation where she was being mistreated, Albert intervened to protect her, despite the risk to his career. His actions brought public attention and legal trouble, though the matter was ultimately not pursued. He returned to his duties, guided by conscience rather than recognition.
Albert served in Melbourne and across the Geelong district, eventually taking charge of the Geelong Watch House. Shortly before illness forced him to resign, he received formal commendation for his diligence and dedication.
His health had troubled him for more than two years when he died peacefully at home in Geelong in September 1899, aged just 36. At his own request, he was brought back to Colac to rest beside his father.
Annie never remarried, raising their sons alone. More than a century later, this grave tells the story of a man who lived with responsibility, loyalty and a quiet, enduring compassion for others.
