Weeks before her death, Jane Reed stepped into Victoria Hall, dressed in a black ‘merveilleux’ gown and accompanied by her husband. Around her, music played as seventy couples gathered for the annual hospital ball. It was an evening of dancing, laughter and community—offering no hint of the sorrow that lay ahead.

 

Jane’s life began in Woodend, the second of five children born to John Barker and Catherine Bell. She was raised on the family property, Broomhill, at Carlsruhe, where her parents had established a prosperous life after arriving in Victoria in 1851.

 

In 1883, at the age of twenty two, Jane married the well-regarded schoolteacher John Reed at St Paul’s, Kyneton. Together they settled in Barongarook, where they built a loving home and raised their three children—Eva, Cyril and Clive—whose lives brought her great purpose and joy.

 

Jane was known for her quiet strength and devotion. When measles swept through the district and her children fell ill, she cared for them tirelessly. Though they recovered, Jane herself contracted the disease, and pneumonia soon followed.

 

Despite the constant care of Dr William Henry Brown and Nurse Kate Swanton, who was brought from Melbourne, Jane’s condition worsened. Within ten days, she had passed away. In her final hours, she signed her will with a trembling hand, her thoughts firmly on her children’s future.

 

Jane Reed was laid to rest with deep respect from the community, remembered for a life defined not by its length, but by love, care and unwavering devotion.
