Life Story
Behold an entrepreneur! John Clark Brown, a man whose energy, ambition and vision left a lasting impression wherever he lived.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1843, John arrived in Australia as a small child with his parents, James Brown, a solicitor, and Janet Dawson. At just twenty years of age, he married seventeen-year-old Sarah Jane Collins at Young, New South Wales. Within two years they welcomed a daughter and son, but tragedy soon overshadowed their young family. Sarah died in 1865 aged only nineteen, and the following year their ten-month-old son also died.
Determined to rebuild his life, John moved to Wangaratta where he married Janet Martin. They later settled in Mansfield before opportunity drew him to Williamstown. There he established the famous J. C. Brown Corner at the Strand and Ferguson Street — a drapery business renowned for elegance and innovation. John transformed shopping into an experience, staging elaborate Spring Shows and dazzling Christmas displays that drew crowds and delighted customers.
After selling the successful business in 1891, the family moved to Birregurra for country life, where John opened another drapery store in Main Street. Yet business was only part of his contribution. A tireless advocate for his community, he served as Electoral Registrar for the Cape Otway division of Polwarth and as an Honorary Justice of the Peace.
Newspapers remembered him as an energetic citizen who always worked to advance the interests of Birregurra and district. When John died suddenly from acute spinal meningitis in January 1899, aged fifty-six, the district lost not only a businessman, but a true community champion. Janet survived him by thirty years and rests beside her beloved husband here at Colac Cemetery.
