On a hot Sunday afternoon in January 1896, Patrick Bowley, having first sought his mother’s permission, set out for Lake Colac with a friend, James McMahon of Camperdown. Patrick was just sixteen.

 

Patrick could not swim, yet wandered beyond his depth, and in a moment, everything changed. James couldn’t save him but raised the alarm. Help came quickly, but it was too late. After an initial failed attempt, rescuers recovered his body.

 

Patrick was the youngest of seven children of Robert James Bowley and Mary Rahilly. Born in Camperdown, he moved with his family to Colac in 1890, where his father established a saddlery business near Messrs Scott Bros Livery Stables in Murray Street. Two years later his father left Colac, leaving Mary to care for the family Patrick was later remembered as “a nice boy in the truest sense of the word—well mannered, inoffensive and of a quiet disposition. There were few who did not know Pat Bowley. He was a promising boy”.

 

A magisterial inquest, requested by Constable Olney, was held the following day at Mrs Bowley’s home in Queen Street.

 

The scale of his funeral reflected the depth of loss. Forty members of the C.Y.M.S. marched ahead of the hearse in solemn procession. Many wreaths spoke of a grieving community.

 

His mother’s grief endured. When she died in 1927, she was laid to rest beside her son.
