Life Story
Born in King’s County, Ireland, the eldest of nine children, James, aged twenty-three, crossed the world aboard the Great Australia with five younger siblings. The journey was no easy passage—caught in a fierce storm near the Cape of Good Hope, the ship limped into Algoa Bay for repairs before finally reaching Melbourne in 1862. It was a hard beginning to a new life.
By twenty-seven, James had married Annie Harrison, and together they built a family—children born in Ballarat and Birregurra, James and his business partner George Illidge raised a steam-powered flour mill to serve the district’s farmers. When George Illidge died, the burden fell solely to James. He adapted, as pioneers must, considering turning the mill to new purposes as times changed.
But life was not without sorrow. Three of his eight children died in infancy, their brief lives leaving quiet absences in the family story.
In Colac, James became a familiar figure as publican of the Brewers Arms Hotel (now the Austral), baker, councillor, and community man. He served on committees, supported local enterprise, and helped shape the growing town. There was even a curious moment of misjudgement. A leap from a moving train that ended in court which reminds us that he was human, fallible, and spirited.
In his final years, illness took hold. Though a trip to Tasmania brought brief relief, it could not restore him. James died in 1885, aged just forty-seven.
And so here he rests - a man of enterprise, of family, of resilience - his story woven into the life of this town.
