LIFE STORY
Mary Leek’s life was one of hardship, endurance and remarkable personal change. Born Mary Osbourn in 1811 at Basford, Nottinghamshire, England, she grew up during a time when poverty and strict laws could alter a person’s future in an instant.
In April 1835 she married Richard Hart, but only a few years later her life took a dramatic turn. On 15 March 1839, Mary was accused of larceny by a servant, convicted and sentenced to fourteen years’ transportation. Leaving England behind, she arrived in Tasmania in September that same year, facing an uncertain future far from home and family.
For many women, such a sentence marked the end of opportunity. Instead, Mary proved remarkably resilient. In Launceston she began rebuilding her life and, on 24 April 1843, married George Leek, a former convict who had also received a second chance. Together they welcomed two children in Tasmania before eventually settling in the growing district of Colac.
Mary’s fortunes continued to improve when she received a pardon in October 1846. Free from the restrictions of her sentence, she and George established a respected life in colonial Australia and became part of a community far removed from the circumstances that had once defined them.
She died on 3 September 1874.
Mary Leek’s story reminds us that transportation did not always end in despair. Through determination and perseverance, she transformed a life marked by punishment and loss into one of family, stability and belonging.
