LIFE STORY

William Batson’s life was one of promise and steady achievement which was cut short just as a new chapter was beginning.
Born on 26 May 1863 at Winchelsea, the fourth of ten children to Mary Ann Cashin and Edward Batson, William grew up in a family well known across the district. His father was among the earliest workers for Thomas Austin of Barwon Park and became a highly respected pastoralist, setting a strong example for his son.
William followed his father’s path, establishing his own farm at Modewarre, where he built up a herd of sheep and dairy cattle, along with the comforts of a well-furnished home. In 1894, he married Mary Ann “Pollie” Thomson at the Wesleyan Church in Beeac, a union noted in the local press as a “fashionable wedding.” Their first daughter, Irene, was born in 1896.
By late 1897, William had sold his Modewarre property and moved to the Colac district, purchasing land from the Mertoun Park estate. He was warmly welcomed as “a highly respected resident” and a desirable addition to the community. Their second daughter, Doris, was born in 1898 while plans were underway for a new cottage.
Within months, everything changed.
Ill health forced William to leave his property, and in June 1899, at just 36 years of age, he died—leaving behind a young wife and two small daughters, the youngest only eight months old. His estate, valued at over three thousand pounds, spoke of what he had achieved, and what might have been.
Pollie was left to carry on alone, but her own life was short. She died in 1903 and was laid to rest here beside him. Their daughters never married; their lives brief and together, they all rest here, a quiet reminder of lives shaped by hope, and loss.
