LIFE STORY

The memory of famine never truly left Michael Ryan. Even on the rich volcanic plains of Cororooke, he carried with him the lessons of survival learned in Ireland.
Born in 1840, Michael spent his early years in Tipperary Town during one of the darkest periods in Irish history. The Great Famine brought hardship, eviction and uncertainty to countless families. Seeking a better future, the twenty-two year old trader boarded the Champion of the Seas in 1863 bound for Australia.
During the voyage he met Honorah Bourke, and a partnership forged through courage and determination soon became a lifelong love story. They married at Port Fairy in 1865 and began building a future together through tenacity and relentless hard work.
Near Koroit, Michael purchased thirty-five acres where he farmed potatoes, wheat and tobacco, raised livestock and became known for producing quality seed potatoes. Over the next eighteen years, nine children were born into their busy Irish household, where faith, family and perseverance shaped daily life.
Believing even greater opportunities awaited his children, Michael moved the family to the Colac district. His knowledge of farming earned work for him and his sons on the influential Robertson Estate. Recognising the potential of the fertile volcanic soil, Michael secured fifty-one acres through the estate subdivision and built a prosperous farm. Success allowed him to invest, save and help establish security for the next generation.
When Michael died from meningitis on 22 May 1884, aged fifty-five, he was described having “an unassuming disposition” and neighbours remembered him as “a very successful farmer” and “a much-esteemed member of his community.”
“Michael left behind far more than successful farms when he died at Cororooke. He left a legacy of resilience. Fleeing famine and poverty in Ireland, he found fertile plains and opportunity in Australia, despite the odds.”
