LIFE STORY

Catherine Ledward’s (nee Withers) beautifully carved headstone is often considered one of the loveliest memorials in the Colac Cemetery, quietly reflecting the love and grief behind her short life.

Born around 1833 in the tiny Wiltshire hamlet of Patney, England, Catherine was baptised in the ancient St Swithun’s Church. Her father worked as a farm labourer for the Earl of Radnor and, unusually for a young woman of her background, Catherine received an education and could read and write. Her childhood was marked by sorrow when two younger sisters, Eliza and Diana, died within days of each other in 1837.

By the early 1850s, hard times in rural England and the promise of opportunity in Victoria encouraged thousands to emigrate. At nineteen, Catherine made the long voyage alone to Australia, travelling to join her uncle, Mr Wells, in Newtown near Geelong. Her occupation was recorded as domestic servant.

In Geelong she met Thomas Power Ledward, an ambitious young chemist who had arrived in the colony as a teenager with his widowed mother. The couple married in 1857. Catherine was twenty-three while Thomas, though claiming to be twenty on the marriage certificate, was in fact only eighteen.

Their future together must have seemed full of promise when they moved to Colac, where Thomas worked as a chemist. Tragically, just four years later, Catherine contracted gastric fever and died in 1861 aged only twenty-seven.

Today, Catherine’s beautifully carved headstone still stands in the Colac Cemetery. More than 160 years later, its elegance speaks quietly of a young woman whose life in Australia lasted only a few short years, and of the love and grief felt by those she left behind.
