LIFE STORY
Mary Bowles was born in County Clare, Ireland, around 1789. She spent most of her life in Ireland, raising her family and enduring years of hardship before making an extraordinary journey late in life.
At about sixty years of age, Mary and her husband James left famine-ravaged Clare and sailed for Australia aboard the Joshua. With them were their youngest daughters, Anne and Jane. Arriving in Victoria in 1852, Mary was reunited with children who had travelled ahead to build new lives in the colony.
The Colac district became her home. She witnessed weddings, welcomed grandchildren and enjoyed seeing her family prosper in a land of greater opportunity.
Mary also knew sorrow. In 1868 she lost her husband James after more than fifty years of marriage and the tragic drowning of a baby grandson.
Yet she lived on for four more years, remaining a respected elder of a growing family. In her final days she was cared for at Cundare by her daughter Ellen and son-in-law William Wilding, a fitting reflection of the strong family bonds she had helped create.
When Mary died in 1872 at the age of eighty-three, she had witnessed the remarkable transformation of her family from famine survivors to established settlers in western Victoria. In the years that followed, all of her children and grandchildren moved away from the Colac district, many finding new opportunities around Echuca and northern Victoria.
Today, the grave of James and Mary Bowles remains one of the few visible reminders of the family's early years in Colac. Their memory is linked to three young grandchildren—Maurice Bowles McMahon, and the infant children John and Catherine Bowles—whose brief lives also ended in the district. Together they represent the joys, sorrows and enduring legacy of a pioneering family.
