LIFE STORY
Eliza Rosina Dunstan’s life was brief, but the warmth of her spirit left an enduring impression on those who knew her. Born on 1 March 1880, she grew up on her family’s farm at Irrewillipe, thirteen miles from Colac. The second youngest of eight children, Eliza was surrounded by the lively companionship of brothers and sisters who adored her.
Known by her parents as a girl who was “always full of fun,” Eliza was rarely far from the centre of family games, laughter, or harmless mischief. Yet beneath her playful personality was a hardworking and caring young girl. As she grew older, Eliza willingly accepted greater responsibilities around the home. Cooking, laundry, caring for younger siblings, and helping with farm chores became part of her daily routine. Despite these burdens, she retained the buoyant spirit that made her a favourite among her brothers and sisters.
Nothing prepared the family for the tragedy that unfolded in March 1894. After spending Friday evening in her usual high spirits, Eliza went to bed seemingly well. During the night she awoke in pain and her family gathered around her. Her father later recalled that she had been "at school and work as usual on Friday" and had shown no sign of serious illness. As her condition worsened, her brother was sent to fetch Dr Brown from Colac, eighteen miles away. The doctor came immediately, but before he could arrive Eliza died in her father's arms, just three days after her fourteenth birthday.
Eliza’s story is a poignant reminder of both the fragility of life and the remarkable resilience of a young girl whose kindness, laughter, and devotion to family were never forgotten.
